Our story

Datonet is a local Internet Service Provider delivering internet, VoIP, and IT services to homes and businesses in Pretoria East and surrounding areas.

The company was founded in 2017 by Daniel and Tobie, two friends who have known each other since their school days. Their passion for technology and wireless networking started long before Datonet, when they were involved in networks such as Plotnet/Wipronet.

With no existing customer base and limited capital, they built Datonet from the ground up. The goal was simple: to provide reliable internet services and treat customers the way they would want to be treated themselves.

Daniel has lived in Bashewa his entire life and has always believed that residents of Pretoria East should have access to reliable internet and responsive, personal support. Tobie, who lives in Kleinfontein, shares the same vision and strongly believes in employing local people and creating opportunities within the community.

What started as a small business has grown into an established service provider with a dedicated team of field technicians, technical support staff, and administrative personnel. Daniel and Tobie remain actively involved in the day-to-day operation of the business, the network, and customer support.

Today, our focus remains the same as it was on day one: reliable services, fast support, and personal customer care. We believe technology should bring people together, and we strive to build long-term relationships with our customers through honest service, professional support, and a genuine commitment to the communities we serve.

Network & Technical Infrastructure

Datonet’s network is built with a focus on stability, reliability, and strong performance. We understand that internet service is only as good as the network behind it, which is why we have developed a solid and well-diversified infrastructure over time.

We currently have three independent Layer 2 links to Johannesburg, terminating at the Teraco data centre. These links run over three different providers — DFA, MetroFibre, and Openserve — so we are not dependent on a single supplier. This helps reduce outages and keeps the service more stable.

The network is also IPv6-ready, which prepares us for future technology and growth.

In total, our core network has a capacity of 4 Gbps, with normal peak-time usage reaching around 2.5 Gbps. This means our network can still perform well even when many users are online at the same time.

For faster local traffic handling, we are directly connected to both NAP Africa and JINX internet exchange points (IXPs). This allows local traffic to flow more efficiently and with lower delay.

International traffic is handled through three different IP Transit providers, giving us extra routing options and helping to keep global connectivity more reliable.
